About the Author
Dr. Hesham Atwa went to medical school at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. His internship was done at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pennsylvania. Residency was completed at the MGH program part of the University of Illinois in Chicago. His fellowship was in laparoscopy at the University of Texas, Houston with Dr. Philip Leggett.
Dr. Atwa has been in private practice for the past 25 years on Long Island, New York. He is also the Chief and past Director of surgery at Mather Northwell Hospital in Port Jefferson, New York. Currently, he is the Chief and Director of surgery and Director of robotic surgery at Saint Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, New York, President of the Medical Staff and Medical Board at St Charles Hospital, Port Jefferson, New York, and Chief and Director of surgery at Saint Catherine Hospital in Smithtown, New York. He has performed over 13,000 operations and assisted other surgeons on 7,000 cases. Over the past five years, 95% of his practice has shifted from laparoscopic to robotic surgery and over 2,000 cases have been performed. The most common procedures he performs are general surgery, foregut surgery, bariatrics, revisional bariatrics and colorectal surgery.
Dr. Atwa is a proctor and case observer at the Observation Center for Intuitive Surgery. He is the creator of an ondemand video course for robotic surgery.
